BMW Safety Recall 20V-601: Investigation

Brand new BMW plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles may be ticking time bombs. In October 2020, BMW acknowledged that it manufactured and sold PHEV with high voltage batteries that could catch fire when charged. This means that the vehicles cannot be charged and cannot be driven in any mode that charges the potentially defective batteries. Obviously, this places severe limits on drivers’ ability to use their vehicle and is extremely dangerous.

In Safety Recall 20V-601, BMW recalled 4,509 vehicles manufactured with a potentially faulty high voltage battery. The recall advises consumers that if the battery were to short circuit while the vehicle was being driven, the vehicle could catch fire.

The affected vehicles could include the following Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV):

• 2020 BMW 3 Series
• 2021 BMW 3 Series
• 2020 BMW 5 Series
• 2021 BMW 5 Series
• 2020 BMW 7 Series
• 2021 BMW 7 Series
• 2020 BMW i8
• 2020 MINI Cooper Countryman
• 2021 MINI Cooper Countryman
• 2020 BMW X3 SAV
• 2021 BMW X3 SAV
• 2020 BMW X5 SAV
• 2021 BMW X5 SAV

BMW does not yet have any fix for this issue.
